During the fall semester of 2021, my layout class was assigned a project to create a booklet based on an annual report.  The goal of this project was to create a booklet with important information we found important from the report while presenting it as a dynamic layout. Along with this part, we were also tasked with creating an interactive webpage that showed our designs that could be accessed on the web.

Color Theme Inspiration

We were allowed to choose any brand but with a few exceptions:

1. We couldn't do a brand we already worked on this semester

2. We could not do food or entertainment (ex. Spotify, McDonalds’)

3. We had to create an interactive element in the booklet (like a pop-up, overlay, or flaps that would showcase information underneath)

With all of this in mind, I had a few brands in mind that would be fun to design, but that year I got into sneakers. For me, the choice was obvious: NIKE.

The difficult part of creating this booklet was displaying the information in a way that is still legible but breaks the traditional forms of a booklet layout. This pushed me to play with larger typography for some spreads, using elements that correlate to the theme and finding a way to make certain information stand out on a page but integrate with the elements on the layout.

Even when it came to visual aesthetics, finding the right color schemes and using hand-drawn elements took some work and revisions. Throughout this process, I learned to hone my illustration skills and combine them with design. Combining both areas led me to produce one of my best projects!

FINAL LAYOUTS

Below are some of the layouts I created for this booklet. This was a fun exercise in seeing what elements I could use for graphs and showcasing the reportings for the revenue for that year.

While I had to go through several drafts and iterations, I ended up with a layout that I was proud of. I found a way to create a layout that was visually dynamic and showcased a good use of design and art.
